Desert Herbarium Workshop Recap
With the new release of our Desert Herbarium: Plants of the Modern Mojave & Neighboring Deserts book, what better way to demonstrate the book's uniqueness than the activity itself is created around: plant pressing. On a hot Sunday morning in August, our good friends at the Mojave Desert Land Trust allowed us to use their (air conditioned) conference room for our Desert Herbarium Plant Pressing Workshop.
The book's writer and illustrator, Lisa Burford, led the workshop. We learned about herbaria including some famous people who had them. A tour of MDLT's Herbarium was given, and Madena, Director of Plant Conservation Programs at the MDLT, showed off some of their professional specimens and answered our group's questions. We also gained knowledge on different kinds of flower and plant presses, how to properly collect specimens, and pressing tips.
Then we got into the hands-on part of the workshop. We glued pre-pressed Desert Marigolds into our own copy of Desert Herbarium. After the mounted specimens dried, we then learned how to lay our own clipped White Sage and get them ready for pressing.
We all had such a good time, we're doing another workshop this September for anyone who missed out on this one!
